A little bit of history

Then ...

The coastal strip of land south from Cape Tribulation to the Daintree River was declared open for selection in 1877 and recorded settlement of the region dates from the early 1880s. Crops such as maize, corn, pineapples and bananas later made way for cattle fattening, timber and other large scale primary industries.

In 1956 the first ferry operated on the Daintree River followed in 1963 by a dirt road linking the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation. Approval for settlement of 1100 freehold blocks was gazetted in the 1980s and in 1992 work commenced on the sealing of the road.

... and Now

Looking north to Cape Trib

The Daintree Coast in the year 2003 has become a vibrant and exciting community of approximately 1,000 residents who represent all age groups, interests, professions and crafts. We live in six main growth areas: Degarra, Forest Creek, Cape Kimberley, Cow Bay, Thornton Beach and Cape Tribulation.

The binding thread and reason for each person's choice to live here, is a love of the area and a heartfelt wish for peace and quiet. As well as a large dose of pioneering spirit and strong desire to put aside the easy urban comforts, (which have long been taken for granted), in exchange for an innovative, challenging and rewarding lifestyle. It can also be uncompromising in its demand for every ounce of your energy and commitment to live without those comforts.

For instance, there is no mains power and life without it can have its drawbacks, sometimes requiring drastic lifestyle changes and re-evaluation. Alternative energy supply limits the use of the more 'power hungry' appliances such as freezers, air conditioners, electric frypans etc and if you are a take-away fan or a movie/theatre buff, maybe you should consider a more suburban lifestyle.

BUT, if you are looking for a slower, gentler, less stressful way of life surrounded by scenery of unparalleled natural beauty, then WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME.
